When I consider my art and what lies beneath it, I recall my childhood and wanting to devour any book, film or TV show that told stories of monsters and the worlds they lived in. From Dracula to Godzilla, my brothers and I couldn’t get enough of these mysterious and horrific creatures. It wasn’t long before they found their way into my art. Therianthropy, the mythological ability or affliction of individuals to metamorphose into animals or hybrids, is a subject that still fascinates me. As I shed old ways and evolve as an artist, the concept of shapeshifting has become less about mythological creatures and more about my own transformation, whether physical or psychological. Here you’ll find a collection of drawings, paintings and stitchings containing these fantastical versions of myself, as well as those close to me, and the landscapes we inhabit.
Sabrina Small is a mixed media artist with an emphasis on drawing, painting and stitching. Her artwork, inhabited by Lovecraftian beings, speaks to the raw and grotesque nature of life on this planet. These personal representations are both autobiographical diaries and sensitive documentations of her past relations and life experiences.
Sabrina earned her BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Berlin, Budapest, Hamburg, Los Angeles, Mallorca, Miami, Nanjing, Philadelphia, Sarasota, San Francisco, Seattle, and Stuttgart. She currently lives in Philadelphia.
